Normal Days

I am so grateful for daily reminders that "normal" days are the best days! As a stay-at-home-hoemeschooling-mom it can be easy to think that every day is the same, and even get lost in the routine if it all. But honestly, with four kids our days are full of surprise and variety! I LOVE:

Finding random toys in strange places...

Silly faces when something excites us...

The twists and turns art projects can make...

Creative Lego time...

Random family outings to mix it up...

And having fun at the nearby park.

What a lucky girl I am to have everyday filled to the brim with these wonderful people!

Our Little Reading Star!

We recently celebrated our 2nd little reader in the family! Evelyn finished the "100 Easy Reading Lessons" book that we like to use. Although it was the same book we used for her older brother, it was certainly a different process. She needed a little more time to warm up to the idea of reading, but once she set her mind to it there was no stopping her!

Her favorite books are anything with bunnies or kitties in them, here's what we have from the library today...

Reading is not the only exciting thing for Evelyn, she also have a new pair of glasses! ...For reading :)

She's so cute! But to top it all off, yesterday she lost a tooth! We love it when the Tooth Fairy can come for a visit!

Our little Evelyn is growing up fast! We love her a TON!

What We've Been Reading

Winter is a great time to cuddle up and share a stack of good story books! Our Library has a limit of 50 items that can be checked out on one card at a time. It is so easy for me to fill that limit! Here's a sample of what we have been reading lately.

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat - By Simms Taback - This is a great story. The cut outs in the illustrations made it fun for the kids and I liked that it showed some frugality and creativity.

I'm attempting to bring more math story books into our reading time. This was our introduction to the Sir Cumference series. I think it will take a little time for the kids to love the series, but I have already seen how it's easier for them to remember the math concepts that were used through the story.
Ants at the Picnic is a counting by 10 book with hidden numbers to find and busy ants carrying off the picnic. Everyone enjoyed it!

Here are some that Little John picked out. "They were cool", he says.

We haven't had much snow this season and we've missed it! So we focused on snow in other ways for the past week or two. These books are some random winter finds, but we enjoyed them and even had some good discussions on being prepared for storms and different weather, as well as helping neighbors, and also how snow can make our world feel so magical. Some of our favorites are -

Blizzard - A story from the authors own experience of a snowstorm that covered everything in 40 inches of snow! Great for talking preparedness, helping neighbors, but also brings in measurements as well as maps!

It Feels Like Snow - Oh so cute! Little Alice predicts the weather with twitchy nose and throbbing toes, but does anyone believe her?

Snow - This little book really captures the pure childlike joy that snow can bring, and how it covers our world with a blanket of magic.

Since real snow wasn't around we made some "snow dough". Some different versions of this are on Pinterest, we used cornstarch and lotion from the dollar store. I put the lotion in the fridge and the corn starch in the freezer the night before and it made for some super cold snow dough! Thankfully it didn't take long to warm up. We had so much fun with the texture and figuring out how much lotion to make it "perfect". We will probably do this again sometime, but I will definitely get unscented lotion when we do!

We also had some sweet fun making snowmen inside.

After all this fun we were happily surprised by some REAL snow!

  We had fun. :)

November and December of 2015

Here are some things we enjoyed at the end of 2015. It was a great year!

Frolicked in the leaves!

Learned about recycling

Went to "Bison Day" at our Metro Park

Enjoyed a last romp in the woods.

Investigated pine cones.

Wondered if watermelons float...they do, but not in our sink.

Made our own little carts out of recyclables.

Visited grandparents for Thanksgiving break and had a blast! A roaring fire and the first snow of the season were just a couple of the highlights.

Put up a real Christmas tree!

Made some decorations.

Decorated giant gingerbread men!

Enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather.

Had a great Christmas morning! Chubby Puppies!

The last pic of the year. Epic!

Halloween 2015 Wrap-up

We had a great time this October. Making spooky decorations, putting our costumes together, and of course filling our buckets with candy. We usually go to the Trunk-or-Treat party at our church AND do the normal trick-or-treating but this year we were sick for the normal trick-or-treat night. Bummer! Hopefully that never happens again! It was quite traumatic to miss it, but we had an awesome family party. Complete with zombie pirates we had to shoot with our dart guns and a "boss" monster that dropped chocolate coins when he was defeated. My kids know they have the most awesome dad ever. :)

Anyway, here are some pictures to review the highlights of the month!

Lots of outside time! We love fall weather!

 SO much fun with Jack-o-lanterns!

I had fun with the decorations but this one was my favorite! The kids just threw the spiders up and they clung to it perfectly. :)

We had a "Mummy Wrap"!! Never knew toilet paper could be so much fun!

And of course our costumes! Go Pokemon!! We had Ash, Brock, Nurse Joy, two Pinkachu's and one Pikachu. We won first prize at the Halloween party!
Now everyone thinks I should dye my hair pink...

Project!

"Ghosts and Goblins
Spooks Galore
Scary Witches
at your door
Jack O'Lanterns
Shining Bright
Wishing you a Haunting Night!"

Hooray for Halloween! We've been busy turning our place into a "haunted house" (as Evelyn puts it). I think I've been having more fun than the kids! So today I wanted to get them more involved and we made some little ghosts to fill an empty corner. They were super easy and turned out pretty cute.

This lead to comments like - "making decorations is better than buying them", "we should make these and sell them!", and "I want a ghost stuffy".

Now we have a project for tomorrow! John and Evelyn drew their patterns for their own ghost stuffies, and I did one for Thomas and Lily. I did the cutting tonight and tomorrow we will get the sewing machine out.

What does this have to do with school? Oh you know, measuring, following directions, learning to use equipment properly, gaining confidence in their own ideas and abilities, and totally fun. Are we going to start mass production and sell these? Ummm, no, but I'm sure that would be very educational as well. Hope everyone is having fun getting ready for a frightful night!
